You can put a child to bed...

...But you cannot force him to sleep! The boy munchkin has a terrible time drifting off to the land of nod. He lies in bed for an average of two hours with his mind whirling, thinking, questioning and creating imaginary scenarios... some good and some bad. Nothing we do or don't do seems to make a difference. We have a bed time routine that we follow every night. We have tried music, back rubs, cuddly toys, audio books, hot packs, cuddles from Mum or Dad... and he still just has such a hard time going to sleep. I think that his body clock is just set to go to sleep at 9.30 pm and wake around 8.30 am. Which would be okay if we didn't need to be on the way to school at 8.00 am!
So by Friday afternoon this is the way he usually looks... so very, very tired. And of course tired seven year old boys are not nice to live with. They are grumpy, they can't decide what to play with, what to draw or even pick a DVD to watch... normally he just settles for tormenting his sister. Who is also tired after two full days at kindergarten... you get the picture! Thankfully Friday is also take away night and Saturday mornings we get to sleep in... that's about all that makes it bearable!
So any suggestions as to how to get a seven year old to sleep?
